Good evenng everyone. Thank you @KICKagainstRAPE for this opportunity to talk about healing after sexual abuse.
Rape is a crime that revolves around power, hostility, and violence. It’s effects are devastating.
If you are a survivor of rape, you are not alone. my hope is that this chat will give you comfort, relief, and validation.
Recovering from a sexual assault or abuse is a process, and that process looks different for everyone.
It may take weeks, months, or years—there’s no timetable for healing after sexual assault.
It’s hard to know what to do, how to feel, or what your options are after a sexual assault. Processing it all can be painful.
If you’re not feeling safe, consider reaching out to someone you trust for support. You don’t have 2 go thru it alone.
Anxiety follows survivors of rape, Many survivors feel constantly jittery & "on-guard", as if expecting another assault at any time
When u are suffering from feelings of anxiety, Breathe & tell yourself u are ok & safe. Send positive, messages to yourself.
There are three phases to Rape Trauma Syndrome: 1. The Acute Phase 2. The Outward Adjustment Phase 3. The Resolution Phase.
How long your journey to recovery takes will depend on your situation and how supportive the people around you are.
When you have a flashback, tell yourself that this is normal for survivors. Tell yourself that you are safe now.
Guilt and shame maintain your victimhood and allow your perpetrator more power and control.
Blaming yourself robs you of a very important resource of help in your recovery—YOU. Don’t give in to those feelings.
Exactly. and most survivors need someone to talk them through this phase. Self-Blame should NOT be allowed. https://twitter.com/KICKagainstRAP…
Angry outbursts and/or persistent irritability are commonly reported by survivors of rape.
You have a right be angry as no one had the right to violate your mind and body.
Pretending that "everything is fine" or that "it could have been worse." will delay your healing process. Face what happened.
A loss of faith in people can lead to becoming fearful and mistrustful of others after sexual abuse. don't lose faith.
The decision to come for counselling must always be the survivor's own. Counselling only works when the person is ready to talk.
It is one thing to hear what a person is saying; it is quite another to really listen.
Remember that no matter what you have been through, and no matter where you are now, you can still heal and have a wonderful life.
Finally, When feelings and memories are acknowledged they are eventually released and survivors heal.
Thank you everyone! and thank you @KICKagainstRAPE for the opporttunity to be on #AARTalk tonight!
